Signs of Autumn
                               by Fran Hafey

Summer is saying goodbye and autumn is in the air. Our thoughts turn to cooler weather, holidays and for many, having enough. A new season, a new beginning, filled with hope and dreams.

As we watch the leaves begin to fall, and the squirrels scurrying about gathering their winter supplies, it always makes me wonder how they know how much to store away. It brings to mind the story of the ant who was busy, while the grasshopper, lazed around, just watching. When winter came, the ant had plenty while the grasshopper was cold and hungry.

Where I'm from, folks have always watched for signs. One sign I've noticed already this year, are the large amount of acorns falling. I hear them bouncing off the rooftops at all hours, day and night. Another is an unusually large amount of berries on a holly bush and an evergreen.
These things make me wonder if we're going to have a long winter. When there seems to be an ample supply, it truly makes me consider the old farmers reasoning's and predictions. Even when we have a dryer summer, Mother Nature still provides.

Many of us may have heard, that when we see a wooly caterpillar and they're very fuzzy, that means we will have a cold and long winter. The birds are even making a clatter as they feel the change in the air. Hustling and bustling about, preparing their homes for the first frost. The pumpkins are almost the only things left in the garden.
The rest is drying up and will soon die down to be plowed under for yet another season. Folks are gathering wood for their woodstoves. It's as if, Mother Nature's wrapping her arms around us, whispering,  "Wake up, look around, there's change of color and magic all around you!

As each leaf falls, we need to remember to count our blessings and know that yes, we will have enough. Are you busy like the ant or being lazy like the grasshopper? If you have enough, and you see others that don't, then let sharing begin with you, not just during the change of Seasons, but all year round.

Many Autumnal Blessings~.
