Helping Our Planet...Our Home~

How are you helping our home, our planet... earth?
Would you like to know more ways you can help? Please take the time to read this page and check out some of the links and read some of the great sites that can help you find ways to recycle, grow your own garden, create less pollution, plant a tree, find eco friendly products, give away some of your trash that someone else may think is a treasure and much much more!

Water bill got you over a barrel?

The Bite:
Assert a little H2O independence this summer by capturing rain from your rooftop. A simple and inexpensive rain barrel hooked up to your downspout lets you harvest water on drizzly days for use in the garden when it’s hot and dry (just hook up a hose and go).

The Benefits
Save water by actually saving water! 40% of total household water use goes to lawns and gardens during the summer months. Decrease urban and suburban runoff, a major pollution source for local rivers, lakes and coastal waters. Rainwater is naturally chlorine-free. Plants love it, and it’s great for car and window-washing too. Pennies from heaven. OK, rainwater harvesting may only save you on average about $6.50 over a season. Still, that’ll get you a couple of grande iced lattes, which are priceless in the summer heat.
Wanna Try?

To keep your water stash clean and safe, choose a barrel that hasn’t been used to store anything toxic, and cover it with fine mesh to keep out kids, small animals, debris, and breeding mosquitoes.

Planet Natural - the “Great American Rain Barrel” is made from recycled plastic and holds 60 gallons ($125).
Rainsaver Systems - lightweight, attractive two-piece system collects 80 gallons, includes two taps and overflow hose ($220).
Gardener’s Supply Company - a variety of rain barrels, connector kits, and accessories ($90-$235).
Rain Barrel Guide - offers DIY instructions plus a handy formula to figure out how much water can be harvested from your roof.

If 10,000 Biters/people, harvested rainwater for garden use this summer, they’d save about 13 million gallons of treated drinking water.
